Closing or last-published index levels as received from our market-data provider — not a live feed and not the whole world. Commentary is reported as filed, without comment; nothing here is a view on any market or a recommendation to deal. Indian residents investing abroad do so under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme; currency movement affects returns independently of the market.

In short

The route, and who regulates it

Global access is provided through India INX Global Access, an IFSC-regulated entity operating from GIFT City. Resident individuals invest under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme; NRIs and foreign residents onboard through a separate track.

Holdings are covered by SIPC protection, which safeguards securities held at the US broker in the event of that broker’s failure. It protects against the intermediary failing — not against your investments falling in value.

Before you start

Before you remit

LRS has an annual limit

Remittance by resident individuals is governed by the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme, which caps the total that may be sent abroad in a financial year across all purposes — including travel and education, not just investment.

Currency cuts both ways

Your return in rupees is the US return combined with the movement in the rupee–dollar rate. A good year in the market can be diluted by the currency, and occasionally the reverse.

Foreign assets must be declared

Overseas holdings have to be reported in your Indian income tax return, and the reporting obligation applies whether or not you sold anything during the year.

TCS applies on remittance

Tax collected at source applies to outward remittances under LRS above the prescribed threshold. It is creditable against your tax liability, but it affects the cash that actually leaves.

LRS & TCS

Before you send money abroad.

Every rupee you send overseas to invest goes under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme, and your bank collects tax at source on the part above ₹10 lakh a year. Here is what that comes to.

Purpose

TCS is not an extra tax. It is credited to your PAN, shows in Form 26AS, and is set off against your income tax for the year — or refunded when you file your return. Rates as in force from 1 April 2026; your bank applies the threshold across your remittances for the year.

Currency effect

Two returns, not one.

An overseas investment earns in dollars, and you count it in rupees. If the rupee falls, that adds to what you get back; if it rises, it takes away.

An illustration on your own numbers, not a forecast. Returns from overseas investments are not assured, and a stronger rupee would reduce the value in rupees. Capital gains on overseas shares are taxed in India; gains held over 24 months are long-term.
