A different asset class, not a different screen
Commodity trading is the buying and selling of raw materials — gold, silver, crude oil, natural gas, cotton, spices, grains — on recognised exchanges, to benefit from movements in their price or to hedge an exposure you already carry.
What moves them is not what moves equities. Global demand and supply, weather, inventories and geopolitics set commodity prices, which is precisely why they behave differently from the rest of a portfolio.
What to weigh first
A single MCX lot represents a substantial quantity of the underlying. Know the rupee value of one tick before the order goes in, not after.
Commodity positions are margined. Price volatility combined with leverage is what makes the segment risky, and it is the leverage that does most of the damage.
Weather, OPEC decisions, inventory reports and currency all move these contracts, often outside Indian market hours.
Contracts run to a delivery cycle. Unless you intend to take or make delivery, positions need to be squared off or rolled before that point.

What this asset class is for
A diversified allocation built for resilience rather than excitement.
These assets move independently of the stock market, which is what reduces the risk of a portfolio rather than simply adding to it.
Gold and silver have historically held value through inflationary periods and market downturns, when equities have not.
Metals and energy trade well into the evening, tracking international markets long after the cash equity session has closed.
The MCX chain, on one screen
An interactive chain giving a bird’s-eye view of open interest, implied volatility and Greeks — for hedging as much as for direction.
- Strike-wise premiums, implied volatility and open interest
- Margin recalculated as the position changes
- Payoff view before the order is sent
Global context, local relevance
Commodity prices are set globally and traded locally. The feed is curated for that gap: inventory data, trend alerts and outlooks written for an Indian commodity trader.

- Technical trend alerts across metals, energy and agri
